What is HOBY?
Founded in 1958 by actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring a global community of youth and volunteers toward a life of leadership, service, and innovation. For more than six decades, HOBY has empowered young people to make a difference in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities by developing their leadership skills and encouraging lifelong service.
At its core, HOBY helps students explore personal leadership, group leadership, and service leadership, guiding them to understand their strengths, work effectively with others, and take action in their communities.
HOBY Rhode Island proudly carries this mission forward, empowering hundreds of youth leaders from across the state through its 100% volunteer-powered programs. Through immersive seminars and the Leadership for Service (L4S) Challenge—which encourages alumni and volunteers to complete at least 100 hours of service annually—HOBY continues to honor Hugh O’Brian’s legacy, with more than half a million alumni worldwide leading positive change.
